Are you looking to tow a vehicle? Well before you do so you need to understand the maximum towing capacity of your vehicle. Your vehicle is capable of towing a specific amount of weight. If you try to tow a car with more weight than your vehicle’s capacity, you could end up putting lives and property at risk. Your vehicle’s maximum towing capacity is determined by the GCWR or Gross Combined Weight Rating of your vehicle. There are five different components that help make up the maximum towing capacity of your vehicle. These are engine, transmission, axle, frame and brakes. Each component carries a certain amount of stress when an additional vehicle is added along for transport. if you want to tow a heavy vehicle you need to first check your owner’s manual to see what is your vehicle’s tow rating. Tow ratings cover the individual, combined and fully loaded weights at which the tow vehicle can safely pull another heavy vehicle. Here are some of the ratings and rules you should look for

  • The vehicle should not be overloaded.
  • Towing capability is the weight a vehicle can tow. The weight of the loaded vehicle must be within your vehicle’s towing capability
  • Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) is the maximum that the tow vehicle can weigh when fully loaded.
  • Gross Combination Weight Rating(GCWR) is the maximum combined weight of the tow vehicle and anything on it including passengers, fuel etc.
  • Gross Axle Weight Rating is the maximum weight that a single axle can carry.
